If you are looking for a holiday house to rent in a real Greek   village, our houses give you the feeling of a rural location, within a couple of minutes' walk of Gavalohori village tavernas, cafes and shops.

Both houses have been carefully renovated to keep their original Greek flavour, but also feature the comfort and facilities you would expect to find in a modern villa.
Air-conditioning, wireless broadband internet, central heating, house linen etc are included in the price.
These traditional Greek villas are privately owned and maintained by us.
We are completely independent and not affiliated to any holiday company.

The safe sandy beach & tavernas of Almirida are 5 minutes' drive, and the historic Venetian towns of Chania & Rethymnon are 45 minutes away.

Many more beaches, the White Mountains and the Samaria gorge are all in easy reach.

The closest airport is Chania international which has several connections daily  to and from Athens.

An excellent base from which to explore the varied topography and ancient sites of Crete; which also has fascinating 20th century historical connections. Still very much a traditional Cretan village, though now with facilities for self-catering holidays, right through the year.

 Birdwatching:

Crete is a stopping off place for many birds on their migration routes from Africa to Europe and back.  There are a fantastic variety of native birds, especially raptors and wetland birds.

Honey buzzard

Lake Kournas is a famous spot for bird and other wildlife, or you can observe swallows, martins and many other birds from the comfort of The old Wine Press roof terraces.

Cycling:

Crete is one of the best places in the Mediterranean for cycling and walking, especially in the cooler months March-May and September-November. The roads in most parts of the island have improved radically in just the last few years and are now mostly good tarmac.  The by-product of this though is that the older roads - perfect for cycling - are hardly used by normal traffic. Within half an hour or so you can be in the most beautiful & spectacular Cretan countryside, and have it pretty much to yourself.

Both houses have their own parking and gate in to the main courtyard, which is shaded by mature vines. All outside areas have outdoor furniture and umbrellas and barbecues. There is a service room with a washing machine which is shared by both houses. Each house has its own clothes drier, iron and ironing board.

Coast/Beach
Our nearest beach is at Almirida, which is a lively little resort with safe sand and plenty of tavernas to choose from There is also a sailing school that hires out windsurfers and hob-cats. It is 4km by road and takes about 5 minutes to drive, or you can walk by agricultural roads through olive groves, which takes about 45 minutes or so. There are beaches all along the North coast of Crete, so you can always find a quiet spot. There is also a bay nearby with crystal clear water for snorkelling.

Travel
Our nearest airport is Chania International, which is 45 minutes drive. Internal flights connect to Athens several times a day all year - direct charters arrive between March and October. Heraklion airport is about 2 hours drive along the North coast, on the closest thing to a motorway that we have here in Crete. It is nice scenic drive in the day time. We can arrange for a hire car or a taxi to meet you at either airport. A hire car is recommended, especially when it is hot.

Distances
Aposperitis tarvena is 300m from the houses. Gavalohori village centre is 400m. Fronimos mini market is 600m. Chania town is 40 minutes drive. Rethymnon is 45 mins. Samaria gorge is about an hour and a quarter to the top. Knossos is 2 hours drive. Phaistos and Agia Triada are much more interesting, about 2 hours drive on the South coast. Kornas lake, where you can hire a peddalo, float about and listen to jazz from the bar high above the lake 20 minutes drive.

Further details
The shops in the village are very well stocked and you can get most things, apart from fresh meat and fish. There is a bakery and a cake shop and three tavernas.
The nearest taverna, Aposperitis is open from May until the end of October from 6.30 pm every day, and also Sunday lunch times and holidays.

There is a greater selection of shops in Kalives, including butchers shops and bakeries, about 15 minutes drive. There are street markets in Chania and Rethymnon where you can buy the best local produce from the people who grew it. Vans travel around the villages selling fresh produce (you will hear there loudspeakers) including fresh fish.

Banks are only open weeks days until 2pm, but there are plenty of ATMs around the area. The nearest are in Vamos and Almirida.
